Responsible for cultivating the landscaping and grounds surrounding private and public facilities and residences. This can including mowing the lawn either by hand or using a riding lawnmower, trimming and edging around walkways, flower beds, and walls, or by beautifying the land by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.

Students in Landscaping are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Planting and maintaining ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs
  • Maintaining grounds of property using hand or power tools and equipment
  • Operating vehicles and powered equipment including mowers, tractors, and twin-axle vehicles
  • Determining the most effective pesticides to use based on soil and pest types
  • Properly diagnosing diseases in plants and treating those accordingly

Career Options

Most Landscaping graduates go to work as groundskeepers, outdoor maintenance workers, or gardeners. Landscapers can focus on the exterior or ornamental landscaping or specifically on lawn care. Landscaping is very physical work, and the hours change based on the season. Although many landscapers work full time, some work part time.

Requirements

Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete all required activity in the Career Preparation Period, including Career Exploration and Career Success/Workplace Skills.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
